Out & About is White Pines Academy's community-based social and recreation program designed for adults (18+) with autism and intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Through small-group outings and recreational experiences, participants have opportunities to explore their communities, build friendships, practice social and communication skills, and develop greater confidence and independence in everyday settings.
Our four-hour outings offer meaningful opportunities for recreation, social connection, and community participation without the commitment of enrolling in a full-time program.
Activities vary based on participant interests, seasonal opportunities, and community events.
Outings may include:
Out & About provides opportunities to build friendships, develop social confidence, and practice important everyday skills in real-world settings.
Depending on individual abilities and support needs, participants may also practice community safety, making purchases, navigating public spaces, and using Barrie Transit.
Activities are planned to encourage meaningful participation, independence, and enjoyment while providing a supportive group experience.
White Pines Academy values autonomy, personal choice, and self-determination.
Participants should demonstrate an interest in attending and a willingness to participate in planned activities, with appropriate encouragement, accommodations, and individualized support provided as needed.
We recognize that some individuals may need additional time, reassurance, or support when adjusting to unfamiliar environments or experiences.
All new participants begin with a meet-and-greet to discuss their strengths, interests, communication styles, support needs, routines, preferences, and goals.
This process helps determine whether Out & About is an appropriate fit and whether White Pines Academy can provide the supports necessary for safe and meaningful participation in community-based activities.
Participants must be able to participate safely in community settings with the supports and accommodations available.
White Pines Academy is not equipped to support behaviours involving extreme physical aggression or highly disruptive behaviours that present significant safety concerns and cannot be safely managed within the program.
Individualized behaviour support strategies or plans may be developed when appropriate to support successful participation.
Program suitability is assessed individually, considering behavioural support needs, reasonable accommodations, group dynamics, staffing resources, and the safety and well-being of participants and staff.
