At White Pines Academy, we believe that meaningful learning and personal growth begin with understanding the whole person — not simply their behaviours, challenges, or diagnosis.
Our approach is holistic, person-centred, and trauma-informed, recognizing the complex relationship between behaviour, emotions, personal experiences, relationships, and the environment. While we incorporate relevant principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), our educational philosophy extends beyond traditional behavioural approaches.
We recognize that behaviour is influenced not only by environmental factors and learning histories, but also by emotional states, stress, physical well-being, past experiences, and the circumstances of an individual's daily life.
Rather than focusing solely on observable behaviour, we seek to understand what an individual may be experiencing, communicating, or needing, while respecting their autonomy, dignity, and right to self-determination.
White Pines Academy's philosophy is informed by the Program Director and Founder's educational background in psychology, social work, and behavioural sciences - together with over 14 years of professional experience supporting individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. We integrate knowledge and strategies from multiple disciplines to create individualized learning experiences that support practical, social, emotional, and independent living skills.
Our educational approach may incorporate:
Strategies are selected according to each individual's needs, abilities, preferences, and learning goals. Not all approaches or exercises are appropriate or necessary for every participant.
At White Pines Academy, our focus is on equipping individuals with practical tools and strategies they can learn, practice, and increasingly use independently in everyday situations. Through individualized education and skill-building opportunities, we support personal growth, emotional awareness, self-confidence, and greater independence. We believe that individuals should be active participants in their own learning, with their voices, choices, experiences, and goals remaining central to everything we do.
Our goal is not simply to change behaviour, but to empower individuals with the skills, confidence, understanding, and opportunities to thrive as whole people.
